Entrepreneurship and small businesses in Ghana



In Ghana , about 7.14% of young people are  unfortunately unemployed that’s the main reason why entrepreneurship and small businesses are becoming more popular and valued . People are recognizing the potential for economic growth and job creation that comes with supporting small businesses. It's an exciting time where individuals are encouraged to start their own ventures and contribute to the local economy. Plus, small businesses often bring unique products and services to the market, adding diversity and innovation. It's a positive trend that's helping to shape the future of Ghana's economy.



According to GCB bank statistics ,Over 90% of business enterprises in the country are SMEs. Moreover, not only do they form around 80% of the total employment in Ghana but also account for some 60% of the country's GDP. Data from Ghana’s Registrar General’s Department (RGD) indicates that 92% of businesses are registered as MSMEs. The majority of businesses within the MSME sector are mainly sole proprietorships, and include small retailers, market women, farmers. 

Entrepreneurial ecosystem.

In Ghana, both women and men are actively involved in entrepreneurship. It's great to see that entrepreneurship is not limited by gender, and both women and men are making significant contributions to the business landscape. Women entrepreneurs in Ghana are breaking barriers and achieving success in various industries, including technology, agriculture, and fashion. 

ANECDOTE 

Anne , an Ivorian student at African University College of communication shared her experience as an entrepreneur, she deals in the exportation of rice and oil to Ghana. She said she buys the rice from Ivory Coast puts them in a STC bus and brings them here in Ghana to sell, “ market has been good and people really purchase my items” she said. She encouraged most people to engage themselves in  entrepreneurship.   ,” it’s a good thing for everyone “ she concluded.

 Ursula Abanga  Alberta Mortty  Akorfa Dawson  Benjamin Cyril Arthur  Theses are some authors of the collection of  book called Afajato  ,the stories from around the Volta lake. Each author brought up their own perspective and experience from fantastic to common and from childhood experiences to traumatizing situations.  While according to Alberta, her story is drawn from her own childhood, for Ursula, her story is entirely concocted from her own imagination and her roommate , unlike Akorfa wrote an almost incomplete story but complete for herself  as she allows the reader to finish the story according to their own imagination. When asked about the writing process of their stories, they unanimously responded that it was difficult because none of them spoke Ewe.
